ASIK is an acronym for Laser Assisted In-situ Keratomileusis, which means, "to reshape the cornea within using a Laser". LASIK can treat a much wider range of correction than most other kinds of refractive surgery.

The LASIK technique requires more surgical skill than PRK (photorefractive keratectomy). Here's why: The surgeon uses an elegant instrument called a microkeratome to create a flap on the cornea. The creation of a precise flap is essential to the patient's overall results. Once the flap is created, it is gently lifted and laid to the side. Next, the laser is applied to shape the exposed inner corneal tissue. This re-shaping of the cornea allows the eye to focus properly, thus reducing or eliminating the need for contact lenses or glasses. Finally, the flap is gently laid back to its original position.

Stitches are not required after replacing the flap. The corneal surface is kept dry for several minutes and is then flushed with antibiotic eye drops. An eye shield is applied to protect the eye overnight. The eyes heal quickly and generally have little to no post-operative pain.

Most patients will notice dramatically improved uncorrected vision the morning after their surgery. Patients may drive the day following surgery and typically experience little, if any, time away from work.

Our Approach to LASIK

During pre-operative visits, patients are provided with LASIK educational materials. Additionally, Doctors Johnson and Deitch provide a thorough explanation of the surgery and its risks, the opportunity to ask questions, and careful consideration of an individual's needs.
