e realize you have a choice when selecting a surgeon. Dr. Stephen Johnson and Dr. Robert Deitch are Board Certified Ophthalmologists who have a combined experience of 30 years in refractive surgery and in the subspecialty of corneal and external ocular disease. Both are Fellowship Trained Corneal Specialists who limit their medical practice to the surgical and medical care of the cornea. Both doctors teach laser vision correction and refractive surgery techniques to other ophthalmologists. They are frequently asked to consult on challenging refractive surgery patients from other practitioners.


Dr. Stephen Johnson
Stephen Johnson, M.D. has dedicated his career to corneal surgery and the restoration of vision.

After graduating from the Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Johnson served his internship and was in Ophthalmology residency at the Indiana University Medical Center. He was board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1981. Dr. Johnson was a fellow in Corneal Surgery and Diseases at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Since 1983, he has been in private practice at Midwest Eye Institute.

Dr. Johnson has a special interest in the field of refractive surgery. At Baylor he explored a method of changing refraction with corneal implants. In 1981, he attended one of the first United States training sessions on radial keratotomy. Dr. Johnson was one of the first surgeons in Indiana to perform epikeratophakia. This is a refractive surgery technique often referred to as the "living contact lens". In 1995, Dr. Johnson performed the first FDA approved corneal surgery with the excimer laser in Indiana. Dr. Johnson was selected by his peers to be listed in "The Best Doctors in America: Midwest Region: 1999-2000, "Best Doctors Nationwide" 2001-2002, 2005-2006, and 2007-2008.

Dr. Robert Deitch
Robert Deitch, M.D. has pursued excellence in corneal and refractive surgery throughout his career.

After graduating from the Indiana University School of Medicine, Dr. Deitch served his internship at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, and completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the Indiana University Medical Center. Dr. Deitch was a fellow in Corneal Surgery and Diseases at Indiana University Medical Center and completed post-fellowship training in refractive surgery at two sites for FDA Excimer Laser Trials: Louisiana State University and The University of Minnesota. Dr. Deitch is board certified with the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Deitch has been in practice since 1989 and was a faculty member of the Department of Ophthalmology at Indiana University Medical Center from 1989 to 1995. While at the Medical Center, Dr. Deitch taught surgical and medical management of corneal and external eye disease to resident physicians. He was honored as the 1995 Ophthalmology Professor of the Year. In 1999, Dr. Deitch was voted "Best Cornea Physician" by area doctors in Indianapolis Monthly's annual Best of Medicine survey.
